Why is populism a bad thing?
Just heard a matey on Sky News sneer as he said populism, like it was a bad thing.

People say populism, which I take as normal people all liking the same thing as the way forward.

Do what the people want and it'll all be ok.

Well, it's true that thick anti-Trump protesters are pretending they don't understand it. Clearly Trump supporters, though, were sophisticated enough to understand and turn out in the right places to vote him in.

That's how it works, isn't it?"

Goodness me you are well informed and clearly superior in intellect and understanding.

Either that or your full of shit voicing four opinions totally grounded in nothing but your own prejudices.
Still carry on your virtue signalling to you chums like a blue arsed baboon with attitude.

And yes, Illinois is a big state, but it was indeed Pennsylvania I should have said.

CM - you seem to have difficulty with the meaning of quick:

'an unusual habit or part of someone's personality, or something that is strange and unexpected:'

There is nothing unexpected about the Electoral College system.

But you carry on using the word wrongly, I don't care.

The electoral college is NOT understood by everyone in the US. Sadly, far from it

Re: Why is populism a bad thing?
FFS you explanation is no better than it was before.

a) The first past the post system can deliver a sweeping governing majority with around 32% of the vote. That is also a "quirk' of that electoral system, just as the electoral college can deliver a winner who doesn't get votes.

b) Given the makeup of those states he could easily have done worse there the more he talked.

c) Illinois wasn't important. It's solidly democrat. Where did you mean? Pennsyvannia?

I know you can't bring yourself to accept the facts slapping you about the face here as you think its part of those liberals delegitimizing him - but it is a quirk of the fucking system.

What else do you think a quirk of the system is?

We've been through this before, it's not a quirk, it's exactly what the system designed for. It overrepresents smaller states in the Electoral College in order to prevent a President being elected just on the votes from two or three big states - California, New York, Florida and Texas mostly, particularly the first two.

Clinton's lead was so big in the first two of those that Trump barely bothered to campaign. Nobody really knows how many extra votes he might have picked up there if he had. Maybe none. But everyone knows the rules before they start and campaigns accordingly.

The system is understood by everyone in the States and is analysed down to the nth degree by the media and both campaign teams. Knowing the system affects whether people vote or don't vote. That's why everyone knew months before Election Day that Illinois and Florida were crucial and that's why both campaigns spent so much money there.

It wasn't a 'quirk'

Sorry guys, but the coffee that Nursey provided for me was never too hot, never had milk or sugar and wasn't for drinking.

You'll have to ask her about it. We had such fun

Sorry, stomper - I'm not pouring anything with sugar in it into computer for you to lap up at the other end - damages it beyond repair

Re: Why is populism a bad thing?
Because politicians who think they know best have to do the bidding of the ordinary people, who believe they have been disenfranchised, because basically they have, in favour of a political course decided upon by politicians, but which they themselves don't suffer the consequences of.

The politicians don't like this rejection of their plotted course. They still think that they know best, even when they manifesty don't.

A good example is Brexit. They said that you were too stupid to decide whether to enter the EEC as it was. They gave you a vote in 1975 and lied to you to get you to vote YES.

Whenever the people are asked about the EU they almost invariably vote against it. France, Holland, Ireland, UK.....so they are either ignored or made to vote again.

The UK is different however. It is still an intelligence superpower, has a huge economy and masses of global good will in other Anglophone countries.

We joined the EEC when we were down on our luck....it has been and abject failure. 115,000 jobs in the fishing and associated industries alone.

The Euro is up shit creek as you will see in the coming weeks and teh EU is more likely to start a war than prevent one.

So going back to your original question.....populism isn't a bad thing. It is just politicians that say so because it means they have to do what the people want , not what they want.
